Chapter Five

What I’ve learned in the last half hour is that Sykes likes to talk. And talk and talk. I’m pretty sure his favorite sound in the world is his own voice. It’s only slightly more pleasant to me than the alarm, which is still blaring.

I’ve hoped for something useful, but so far, he’s either too smart to let anything slip, or so stupid that he’s not focused on the important facts. Pretty sure it’s the second option.

Mostly, he’s been pacing, babbling about getting out of here, someone else will be here soon, they’re all going to pay, and he’s going to spend a lot of time getting reacquainted with the female form as soon as he can.

At least he’s not trying to get acquainted with me. Sykes hasn’t so much as touched me, not even to restrain me. Maybe he’s afraid I’ll read his thoughts again, getting something he doesn’t want to give this time. I feel so stupid for being manipulated.

Not only did I let my guard down around him, but I had too-quickly dismissed the idea that he might have planted that thought in my head.

I should have realized. Thoughts don’t often come through as a single, cohesive sentence, but more a jumble of feelings and stream of consciousness. I was so startled by what I heard that I didn’t question it. I was too concerned. Because I let myself feel something for Sykes.

Rookie mistake.

Based on his monologue, he didn’t come up with the idea on his own. But nothing he’s said gives me any clue as to what’s coming next.

So, I sit on my cold hands, trying to keep up my barriers, listening and watching for any opportunity to get away.

I nudge Virgil, not for the first time. A soft groan escapes him, more than I’ve gotten from him so far. He’s been slumped over, next to me by the back of the room since Sykes threw him.

“Virgil,” I whisper, eyeing Sykes, who is near the door with his back to us. “You have to wake up.”

The alarm stops suddenly, making the room feel steeped in silence. Sykes swings back to me, a big grin on his face. “Won’t be long now.”

I realize then that a tiny thread of relief had moved through me when the alarm stopped. I’d assumed that it meant that the guards had handled whatever was happening out there.

Or, the guards got handled…

My stomach turns at the thought, icy fear moving from my fingertips up my arms. I pull them from underneath me, rubbing my palms together.

Sykes stalks closer to me, his gaze fixed on my hands. I look down, realizing that they were now almost blue, an icy sheen over my fingernails. Quickly, I shove them underneath me again.

The cold seeps upward, though my thighs. Glancing up at Sykes, I realized that my breath was visible in the air. I am literally freezing the area around me. My tentative control is slipping.

“What is that?” Sykes demands.

“What is what?” It’s hard to play dumb when my teeth are chattering, but I don’t exactly have a lot of options.
